Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Save money using your Slow Cooker………

When using a Slow Cooker – Use cheaper cuts of meat. Inexpensive cuts of meat are often high in fat or connective tissue, both of which break down during long, moist heat cooking methods and will help keep the meat juicy and tender. Lean cuts of meat are often more expensive and tend to dry out in the slow cooker.

Vegetables in the Slow Cooker………

Place hard vegetables, like potatoes, carrots, and other root vegetables at the bottom of the slow cooker where they will have more moisture and cook swiftly. Also don’t over crowd your Slow Cooker.

Slow Cooker and Herbs……..

When cooking using your Slow Cooker fresh herbs are best when added to the finished dish, not during the cooking cycle. If added at the beginning of the cooking cycle, many fresh herbs’ flavor will dissipate over long cook times. For dishes with shorter cook times, hearty, fresh herbs, such as rosemary and thyme will hold up well.

Time saver……..

Save time – Cook dried beans in a slow cooker overnight. Want an easy way to cook beans from scratch? Place dried beans (soaked or not) in a slow cooker, cover with about 4 inches of water, and place the slow cooker on low before you go to bed for the night. By the time you wake up, you’ll have a batch of cooked beans ready to be eaten in soups, salads, or even frozen for later use. So make plenty!

Slow Cooker hints………

* Buy cheaper meat. Tougher cheaper meats are better for slow cooking. For best results when cooking meat/chicken, always brown the ingredients in a frying pan first. This locks in the flavor and produces a true slow simmered look and flavor. Be sure to remove all the sauce, juices and bits from the bottom of the frying pan to the slow cooker.
* For even cooking, cut food into uniform-size pieces. Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top.
* Keep the lid on! It is important to retain the heat when making a slow cooker meal, so avoid taking off the lid. Only remove the lid to stir or check for doneness.
