One of America’s Favorites – Sloppy Joe

A homemade sloppy joe with coleslaw

A Sloppy Joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun. The dish originated in the United States during the early 20th century.

Early 20th century American cookbooks offer plenty of sloppy joe type recipes, though they go by different titles: Toasted Deviled Hamburgers, Chopped Meat Sandwiches, Hamburg a la Creole, Beef Mironton, and Minced Beef Spanish Style.

Marilyn Brown, Director of the Consumer Test Kitchen at H.J. Heinz in Pittsburgh, says their research at the Carnegie Library suggests that the sloppy joe’s origins lie with the “loose meat sandwiches” sold in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930’s and were the creation of a cook named Joe.

References to sloppy joes as sandwiches begin by the 1940s. One example is a 1944 Coshocton Tribune ad under the heading “Good Things to Eat” says “Sloppy Joes’ – 10c – Originated in Cuba – You’ll ask for more – The Hamburg Shop” and elsewhere on the same page, “Hap is introducing that new sandwich at The Hamburg Shop – Sloppy Joes – 10c.”

The term sloppy joe’s had an earlier definition of any cheap restaurant or lunch counter serving cheap food quickly or of a type of casual clothing.

Food companies began producing packaged sloppy joe sauce, such as Manwich, by the 1960s.

Sloppy Joe meat being prepared

Several variations of the sloppy joe exist in North America. In Quebec, Canada, sandwiches of stewed ground beef such as pain à la viande and pain fourré gumbo are usually served on hot dog buns. A similar sandwich, the “dynamite”, exists in the area around Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and is distinguished by the use of onions, bell peppers, and sometimes celery.

Stewed meat sandwiches are common in several other culinary traditions as well. The rou jia mo, from China’s Shaanxi Province, consists of stewed pork, beef, or lamb on a steamed bun. Keema pav of Indian cuisine uses a pav bread roll filled with keema, a minced, stewed, curried meat.

Ground turkey or textured vegetable protein may be used as a substitute for ground beef.

A sloppy joe differs from a traditional loose meat or tavern sandwich due largely to its tomato-based sauce.

In some stores in northern New Jersey, an unrelated sandwich made with a combination of deli meat, such as turkey, roast beef or especially ham, with coleslaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese on three slices of rye bread is also known as a sloppy joe.

Today’s Menu: “Not So Sloppy” Turkey Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

Not So Sloppy Turkey Joes w Baked Crinkle Fries 003
For Breakfast I made my Skillet Potatoes and Ham for Breakfast. I used 1 package of Simply Potatoes Steakhouse Seasoned Diced Potatoes and a package of Meijer Diced Ham to prepare it. Just cook the Potatoes according to the package instructions and with about 5 minutes of cooking time left add the Diced Ham. I topped it with Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Colby – Jack Cheese. And Breakfast is served, also had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Rain and more rain all morning and day . Sort of cool out and the temps fell through out the day. Winter’s last blast, hopefully! Did a couple of loads of laundry for Mom and did some things around the house just to keep busy. For dinner tonight it was a Comfort Food Sandwich! I prepared some “Not So Sloppy” Turkey Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

Not So Sloppy Turkey Joes w Baked Crinkle Fries 001
I used my favorite Sloppy Joe Mix, the Hormel Not-So-Sloppy-Joe Sloppy Joe Sauce. I love this Sauce and it’s ingredients! It’s a nice thick Sauce that’s seasoned just right. Which is why they call it Not So Sloppy, it’s thicker than other Sauces and doesn’t drip. The Sauce is seasoned with Spices, Onions, Green Peppers among other ingredients (70 calories and 15 carbs per serving). I’ll also be using Jennie – O Extra Lean Ground Turkey Breast (120 calories per serving) and Aunt Millie’s Reduced Fat Hamburger Buns.

Not So Sloppy Turkey Joes w Baked Crinkle Fries 002
So to prepare it; I started by frying the Ground Turkey. I used a large skillet; sprayed it with Pam Cooking Spray and added a tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Heated it on medium heat. Added the Ground Turkey and seasoned it with Sea Salt, Ground Roasted Cumin, Cilantro Flakes. Stirred and cooked until no longer pink, added the jar of Not So Sloppy Joe sauce. Stirred until heated through. Served on Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calorie Hamburger Bun. Love these! The Sauce combined with the Jennie – O Turkey is a perfect match.

For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, served with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup. For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Double Chocolate Pudding.

“Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w Baked Crinkle Fries 007
It’s a gorgeous Fall day out today! After a light Breakfast I made Mom her Breakfast and she went on to the rehab center. dad starts his therapy today. I stayed home and did a couple of loads of laundry for Mom and cleaned the house. Then after lunch I headed over to rehab center and stayed until late afternoon and back home. For dinner tonight I prepared “Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

It’s Sloppy Joe Night tonight for dinner! A delicious and a super easy meal to make. To make the Sloppy Joes I used a 1 lb. package of Wild Idea Buffalo Ground Round, 1 jar of Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce, and Kroger Lite Wheat Buns. Using Buffalo, or Bison, instead of Beef will give your Sloppy Joe a deeper and richer flavor.

“Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w Baked Crinkle Fries 001
Using a large skillet to brown the Buffalo in I seasoned it with Morton’s Salt Substitute, Ground Black Pepper, and Roasted Ground Cumin. After the Buffalo was browned and no longer pink I added the jar of Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce stirring and making sure the Sauce and Buffalo was well mixed. Simmer until it’s warm, and served. I love the Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce. It’s a good thick sauce well seasoned with Spices, Onions, Green Peppers among other ingredients (70 calories and 15 carbs per serving). I served them on the Kroger Wheat Bun. Another delicious dish using Wild Idea Buffalo. For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup for the Fries. For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Pudding topped with Cool Whip Free.

Today’s Menu: “Not so Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Steak Fries

Another sunny and beautiful day outside again. As I said sunny and a high in the low 60’s! We have rain moving in for a couple of days but still highs in 50’s. Hopefully we have seen the last of Old Man WinterNot So Sloppy Buffalo Joes 004, but I’ve seen it snow around here in April, one time the Red’s Opening Day in April was cancelled because of snow. Went to Costco around 10:00, when they opened. Always best to get there as they open if you use and electric shopping cart to get around, so you can get one and one that is fully charged. I bought some cases of Canned Green Beans, Baked Beans, and Corn. With a 1/2 case of Spaghetti, LaRosa Pasta Sauce, and a case of Instant Potatoes. Purchased all of it for our Church which with other area Churches feed the homeless and needy. Love to help out all I can. I also bought a case of Green Beans for a local shelter here in West Chester and dropped them off. For myself I purchased some Nature Made Supplements and a large Family Pack of Pork Lon Bone-In Chops. Some beautiful and big Chops, can’t wait to have one! For my dinner tonight it’s “Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Steak Fries.
