Today’s Menu: “Not So Sloppy” Turkey Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

For Breakfast I made my Skillet Potatoes and Diced Ham for Breakfast. I used 1 package of Simply Potatoes Steakhouse Seasoned Diced Potatoes and a package of Meijer Diced Ham to prepare it. Just cook the Potatoes according to the package instructions and with about 5 minutes of cooking time left add the Diced Ham. I topped it with Sargento Off the Block Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Also had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. 44 degrees and partly sunny outside today. Took Mom’s car and then my car over to the car wash up the road, long line of cars getting washed today. Back home I grabbed the Windex, paper towel and the indoor car window squeegee and I cleaned the inside windows of both cars. That’s enough for today! For dinner tonight it was a Comfort Food Sandwich! I prepared some “Not So Sloppy” Turkey Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

I used my favorite Sloppy Joe Mix, the Hormel Not-So-Sloppy-Joe Sloppy Joe Sauce. I love this Sauce and it’s ingredients! It’s a nice thick Sauce that’s seasoned just right. Which is why they call it Not So Sloppy, it’s thicker than other Sauces and doesn’t drip as much. The Sauce is seasoned with Spices, Onions, Green Peppers among other ingredients (70 calories and 15 carbs per serving). I’ll also be using Jennie – O Extra Lean Ground Turkey Breast (120 calories per serving) and Aunt Millie’s Reduced Fat Hamburger Buns, which I actually found a package at Meijer last week.

So to prepare it; I started by frying the Ground Turkey. I used a large skillet; sprayed it with Pam Cooking Spray and added a tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Heated it on medium heat. Added the Ground Turkey and seasoned it with Sea Salt, Ground Roasted Cumin, Cilantro Flakes. Stirred and cooked until no longer pink, added the jar of Not So Sloppy Joe sauce. Stirred until heated through. Served on Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calorie Hamburger Bun. Love these! The Sauce combined with the Jennie – O Turkey is a perfect match.

For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, served with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup. For Dessert/Snack later a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Snyder’s of Hanover Waffle Pretzels along with a Sprite Zero to drink.

Hormel Not-So-Sloppy-Joe Sloppy Joe Sauce

Richer and Thicker and Far From Ordinary
Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce is as distinctive as its name. Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce has a hint of barbecue flavor and is richer and thicker than other sloppy joe sauces.

Since its beginning in 1985, there’s been one very graphic way to show the thick and rich texture of Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce: the “drip test.” When you hold up a sloppy joe made with Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce, there are no drips. It’s that rich and thick.

“Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

Today’s Menu: “Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

For Breakfast to start this Wednesday off I Poached an Egg and served it on a toasted Thomas Light 100% Multi Grain English Muffin. Had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea to drink. 48 degrees out today but rain on and off all day. But that’s a good thing, it’s melting the snow! Not a lot going on today so I did a few things around the house and grabbed a push broom and swept the driveway. We used a lot of salt out there due to the ice. For dinner tonight I prepared “Not So Sloppy” Buffalo Joes w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

It’s Sloppy Joe Night tonight for dinner! We haven’t had these in a long time, and they really sounded good! A delicious and a super easy meal to make. To make the Sloppy Joes I used a 1 lb. package of Wild Idea Buffalo Ground Round, 1 jar of Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce, and Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calories Whole GrainHamburger Buns. Using Buffalo, or Bison, instead of Beef will give your Sloppy Joe a deeper and richer flavor.

Used a large skillet to brown the Buffalo in I seasoned it with Morton’s Salt Substitute, Ground Black Pepper, and Roasted Ground Cumin. After the Buffalo was browned and no longer pink I added the jar of Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce stirring and making sure the Sauce and Buffalo was well mixed. Simmer until it’s warm, and served. I love the Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce. It’s a good thick sauce well seasoned with Spices, Onions, Green Peppers among other ingredients (70 calories and 15 carbs per serving). I served them on the Kroger Wheat Bun. Another delicious dish using Wild Idea Buffalo. For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup for the Fries. For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Pudding.

This week’s Wild Idea Buffalo Recipe of the Week is – SLOPPY JOE’S WITH SWEET CORN is – SLOPPY JOE’S WITH SWEET CORN. Kicked up Sloppy Joe’s made using Wild Idea Ground Buffalo along with Onion, Garlic, Spices, Worcestershire, Dijon Mustard, and Maple Syrup. The family is going to love Sloppy Joe’s Night! You can find this recipe or purchase the Wild Idea Ground Buffalo along with all the other Wild Idea Products at the Wild Idea Buffalo website. SLOPPY JOE’S WITH SWEET CORN
This ground BBQ concoction has been called many things, including; Steam Burger, Tavern Sandwich, Spoon Burgers, Barbeque Sandwich and of course Sloppy Joe’s. Whatever you call it, they are delicious!
This hearty sandwich was a childhood favorite for simple suppers and was a huge treat for tailgate events (and still is)! My following recipe is a modified New York Times version, that one of our customers recommended. I modified it based on my own taste, as well as what I had on hand. Garnish it with homemade pickles and flash sautéed fresh sweet corn, for grown-up goodness, that kids will love too. *For best flavor profile, make a day ahead. Leftovers were even better!

Ingredients:
2 – tablespoons olive oil
1 – large onion, diced
1 – 1 lb. packages Wild Idea Ground Buffalo
2 – cloves garlic, minced
1 – teaspoon salt
1 – teaspoon black pepper
1 – teaspoon chili powder
1 – teaspoon cumin
½ – teaspoon smoked paprika
¼ – teaspoon cloves
½ – cup water
2 – cups tomato sauce
½ – cup ketchup
2 – tablespoons Worcestershire
1 – tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 – tablespoons Maple Syrup
¼ – cup fresh squeezed lemon juice, or other citrus

Preparation:

1 – In a heavy skillet over medium heat, heat oil and add onions. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until tender and lightly caramelized. About 10 minutes.
2 – Increase your heat to medium high and crumble in the ground buffalo, and the garlic and dry spices. Cook the meat until browned, stirring occasionally, breaking up the larger pieces up with your spoon.
3 – Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire, mustard and syrup and stir to incorporate. Reduce your heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, or until desired consistency is reached.
4 – Add the fresh squeezed lemon and season to taste.
5 – Serve on toasted buns and top with pickles and fresh sautéed sweet corn with green onions. So good!

One of America’s Favorites – Sloppy Joe

A homemade sloppy joe with coleslaw

A Sloppy Joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun. The dish originated in the United States during the early 20th century.

Early 20th century American cookbooks offer plenty of sloppy joe type recipes, though they go by different titles: Toasted Deviled Hamburgers, Chopped Meat Sandwiches, Hamburg a la Creole, Beef Mironton, and Minced Beef Spanish Style.

Marilyn Brown, Director of the Consumer Test Kitchen at H.J. Heinz in Pittsburgh, says their research at the Carnegie Library suggests that the sloppy joe’s origins lie with the “loose meat sandwiches” sold in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930’s and were the creation of a cook named Joe.

References to sloppy joes as sandwiches begin by the 1940s. One example is a 1944 Coshocton Tribune ad under the heading “Good Things to Eat” says “Sloppy Joes’ – 10c – Originated in Cuba – You’ll ask for more – The Hamburg Shop” and elsewhere on the same page, “Hap is introducing that new sandwich at The Hamburg Shop – Sloppy Joes – 10c.”

The term sloppy joe’s had an earlier definition of any cheap restaurant or lunch counter serving cheap food quickly or of a type of casual clothing.

Food companies began producing packaged sloppy joe sauce, such as Manwich, by the 1960s.

Sloppy Joe meat being prepared

Several variations of the sloppy joe exist in North America. In Quebec, Canada, sandwiches of stewed ground beef such as pain à la viande and pain fourré gumbo are usually served on hot dog buns. A similar sandwich, the “dynamite”, exists in the area around Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and is distinguished by the use of onions, bell peppers, and sometimes celery.

Stewed meat sandwiches are common in several other culinary traditions as well. The rou jia mo, from China’s Shaanxi Province, consists of stewed pork, beef, or lamb on a steamed bun. Keema pav of Indian cuisine uses a pav bread roll filled with keema, a minced, stewed, curried meat.

Ground turkey or textured vegetable protein may be used as a substitute for ground beef.

A sloppy joe differs from a traditional loose meat or tavern sandwich due largely to its tomato-based sauce.

In some stores in northern New Jersey, an unrelated sandwich made with a combination of deli meat, such as turkey, roast beef or especially ham, with coleslaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese on three slices of rye bread is also known as a sloppy joe.
