Kitchen Closed tonight, Domino Pizza!

Today’s Menu: Kitchen closed, Domino Pizza tonight

To start this morning off I had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. 69 degrees, mostly cloudy, and windy outside. After Lunch I got my cart, leaf blower and rake out of the shed for yard sprucing up. Kept the cart out for a while and took a spin around the neighborhood. Mom wanted Pizza tonight. So for Dinner tonight I shut the Kitchen down and it’s Domino’s Pizza tonight.

I was going to prepare Dinner but Mom wanted Pizza. I ordered a Small Hand Tossed Pizza from Dominos. We had toppings of Pepperoni, Extra Italian Sausage, Green Olives, Mushrooms, Black Olives, Robust Inspired Tomato Sauce, and Cheese. Dinner is served! For Dessert/Snack later a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Snyder’s Stick Pretzels with a Diet Lemonade/Tea Snapple to drink.

Today’s Menu: Kitchen closed, Domino Pizza tonight

To start this morning off I Poached an Egg and served it on a slice of toasted Aunt Millie’s Live Carb Smart Wheat Bread. I also heated up a couple of Johnsonville Turkey Breakfast Sausage Links along with my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. 54 degrees, cloudy, and rain after Noon today. Before the rain set in for the day I got some yard work done. Yesterday I had house siding washed down, gutters cleaned out, shed washed down, and the driveway cleaned and scrubbed. So that’s out of the way for the year. I grabbed a rake and the leaf blower out of the shed and cleaned off the deck and then raked the front yard. Things are starting to take shape outside! For Dinner tonight I shut the Kitchen down and its Domino’s Pizza tonight.

I had a good meal all planned out but after it started raining I settled down inside and watched TV and worked some CrossWord Puzzles. That was the end of the Dinner Plans. I ordered a Small Hand Tossed Pizza from Dominos. We had toppings of Pepperoni, Extra Italian Sausage, Green Olives, Mushrooms, Black Olives, Robust Inspired Tomato Sauce, and Cheese. Dinner is served! For Dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Cherry Jello. Take Care and Stay Safe All!

Today’s Menu: Kitchen closed, Domino Pizza tonight

Nothing for Breakfast this morning. I had to fast until I went to the Doctor for my 4 month check up. I did have a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea after I got back. I should have the results by the end of the week. 48 degrees and sunny out today, nice day out there. They say near 6 o degrees tomorrow. Back home I went to Meijer for quite a few items we needed. The prices just keep going up! Meat prices are way out of control. They say it’s going to be a lot worse as the year goes on. After I got back home a friend of mine called and needed to go to the Auto Parts place to pick up a few items to get his car working again. Then back home again I went over to my neighbor’s house and worked on getting his driveway cleared of ice. Too hectic to cook tonight so it’s Pizza for Dinner tonight. So the Kitchen is closed and it’s Domino’s Pizza tonight.

I ordered our favorite, a Medium Domino’s Hand Tossed Pizza Large with Cheese, Sauce, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, and Black Olives, Green Olives. As always the Pizza arrived on time, hot and delicious! For Dessert/Snack later a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Snyder’s Pretzel with a Diet Peach Snapple to drink.

One of America’s Favorites – Chicago-Style Pizza

Deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s

Chicago-style pizza is pizza prepared according to several different styles developed in Chicago, widely referred to simply as deep dish pizza due to its cooking style. The pan in which it is baked gives the pizza its characteristically high edge which provides ample space for large amounts of cheese and a chunky tomato sauce. Chicago-style pizza may be prepared in deep-dish style and as a stuffed pizza.

Deep-dish pizza
According to Tim Samuelson, Chicago’s official cultural historian, there is not enough documentation to determine with certainty who invented Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. It is often reported that Chicago-style deep-dish pizza was invented at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago, in 1943, by Uno’s founder Ike Sewell. However, a 1956 article from the Chicago Daily News asserts that Uno’s original pizza chef Rudy Malnati developed the recipe, and Michele Mohr from the Chicago Tribune reports that the menu at Rosati’s Authentic Chicago Pizza has included deep-dish since it opened in 1926, according to the descendants of Saverio Rosati.

The primary difference between deep-dish pizza and most other forms of pizza is that, as the name suggests, the crust is very deep, creating a very thick pizza that resembles a pie more than a flatbread. Although the entire pizza is very thick, in traditional Chicago-style deep-dish pizzas the crust itself is thin to medium in thickness.

Chicago-style deep-dish pizza

Deep-dish pizza is baked in an iron skillet or a round, steel pan that is more similar to a cake or pie pan than a typical pizza pan. The pan is oiled to allow for easy removal as well as to create a fried effect on the outside of the crust. In addition to ordinary wheat flour, the pizza dough may contain cornmeal, semolina, or food coloring, giving the crust a distinctly yellowish tone. The dough is pressed up onto the sides of the pan, forming a bowl for a very thick layer of toppings.

The thick layer of toppings used in deep-dish pizza requires a longer baking time (typically 30-45 minutes), which could burn cheese or other toppings if they were used as the top layer of the pizza.

Because of this, the toppings are assembled “upside-down” from their usual order on a pizza. The crust is covered with cheese (generally sliced mozzarella), followed by various meat options such as pepperoni or sausage, the latter of which sometimes is in a solid patty-like layer. Other toppings such as onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers are then also used.

An uncooked sauce, typically made from crushed canned tomatoes, is added as the finishing layer; though sometimes, a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese is added for extra flavor.[5]

It is typical that when ordered for carry-out or delivery, the pizza is uncut, as this prevents moisture from the sauce and toppings from soaking into the crust, causing the pie to become soggy.

Stuffed pizza from Giordano’s

Some Chicago deep-dish pizza restaurants ship their pizzas, partially baked and frozen, within the continental United States.

Stuffed pizza
By the mid-1970s, two Chicago chains, Nancy’s Pizza, founded by Rocco Palese, and Giordano’s Pizzeria, operated by brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio, began experimenting with deep-dish pizza and created the stuffed pizza. Palese based his creation on his mother’s recipe for scarciedda, an Italian Easter pie from his hometown of Potenza. Chicago Magazine articles featuring Nancy’s Pizza and Giordano’s stuffed pizza popularized the dish.

Stuffed pizzas are often even deeper than deep-dish pizzas, but otherwise, it can be hard to see the difference until it is cut into.

A stuffed pizza generally has much deeper topping density than any other type of pizza. As with deep-dish pizza, a deep layer of dough forms a bowl in a high-sided pan and the toppings and cheese are added. Then, an additional layer of dough goes on top and is pressed to the sides of the crust. At this stage, the thin dough top has a rounded, domed appearance.

Pizza makers often poke a small hole in the top of the “lid” to allow air and steam to escape while cooking, primarily so that the pizza does not explode. Usually, but not always, tomato sauce is ladled over the top crust before the pizza is baked.

Thin-crust pizza

Chicago-style party-cut thin-crust pizza

Chicago-style party-cut thin-crust pizza
There is also a style of thin-crust pizza found in Chicago and throughout the rest of the Midwest. The crust is thin and firm enough to have a noticeable crunch, unlike a New York-style pizza.

This pizza is cut into squares, also known as “tavern-style” or “party cut”, as opposed to wedges.

According to GrubHub data and Chicago Pizza Tours, thin-crust outsells the more widely known deep-dish style among locals. Technomics food industry researcher Darren Tristano has questioned GrubHub’s conclusion on the basis of the delivery service’s user demographics, and NPR noted that the data would not include information on several deep-dish chains that are not on GrubHub.

Toppings
The typical toppings commonly found on pizzas in most of North America (i.e. sausage, pepperoni, onions, mushrooms, etc) are also standards in Chicago area pizzerias; however, a survey in 2013 indicated that while the most popular pizza topping in the rest of most of the United States, is pepperoni, in Chicago, the most popular topping is Italian sausage. In addition to standard toppings, many local pizzerias also offer Chicago-specific topping options such as Italian Beef and giardinera.

Today’s Menu: Domino’s Pizza

I made a Breakfast Skillet this morning for Breakfast. I used a small Cast Iron Skillet to prepare it. I used 1 Egg Sunny Side Up, Simply Potatoes Diced Potatoes, Cook’s Ham (Diced), Sargento Off the Block Mozzarella, and a couple of shakes of Frank’s Hot Sauce. I also had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Delicious way to start a Winter’s Morning. Wind Chill was in the Teen’s this morning. For the day it’s cloudy and 31 degrees. Did a load of laundry after Breakfast. Cleaned the house today, dusted and ran the vacuum. After that an afternoon of Basketball and NFL Football Playoff Games. It was so relaxing I shut down the Kitchen and ordered a Pizza from Domino’s.

Mom wanted the Domino’s Sweet BBQ. Chicken with Bacon. I’ve had this many times and love it! But for me I orderd a Small 10 inch Hand Tossed Pizza. For Toppings I had Pepperoni, Extra Italian Sausage, Black Olives, Green Olives, Mushrooms, Robust Inspired Tomato Sauce, and Cheese. I had a couple of slices and saved the rest of it. Excellent Pizza and Service! For Dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Pudding. Take Care and Stay Safe All!
