When preparing a recipe that requires you to dry something you’ve just cooked on several layers of paper towels to absorb the grease, use this trick. Lay down several sheets of old newspaper, then place a single layer of paper towels on top.

A little salt in ham is a good thing, but if your ham slices are too salty, place them in a dish of low-fat milk for 20 minutes before heating, then rinse them off in cold water and dry them with paper towels. The ham won’t pick up the taste of the milk, but it will taste much less salty.

To keep cheese mold-free longer, place a piece of paper towel that has been dampened with white vinegar in the bottom of a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. Add three or four sugar cubes, which will attract mold if some does form. Make sure to use a clean knife, whenever you cut cheese.

Never pay for aerosol cooking sprays. Instead buy a giant jug of vegetable oil and add it to a spray bottle as needed. It’s the same thing and will cost you a fraction of the price.

Bread stays fresh for a longer time if you place it in an airtight bag with a stalk of celery. If you are going to freeze a loaf of bread, make sure you include a paper towel in the package to absorb moisture and prevent it from becoming mushy when thawed.

Hint #1 – Iceberg lettuce remains fresher longer than any other type of lettuce because of its high water content. Iceberg will keep for 7-14 days, whereas romaine lasts 6-10 days, and butter (or Boston lettuce) for only 3-4 days.

Hint # 2 – Don’t throw away the outer leaves from a head of lettuce! They come in handy when you need to cover foods in the microwave. You won’t have to use a paper towel, and the leaves will keep your food moist.

To make asparagus last longer in the refrigerator, place the stem ends in a container of water, or wrap them in a wet paper towel and put in a plastic bag. Like flowers, the asparagus will continue “drinking” the water and stay fresh until it’s ready to use.

It’s always a good idea to line the crisper bins of your refrigerator with a few paper towels or sheets of newspaper to absorb excess moisture. Mold spores love moisture, but the towels will keep it away.

If you really want to impress your dinner guests, make some homemade croutons for your salad. Here’s how: After cutting your leftover bread into cubes, fry the pieces in olive oil and a little garlic powder (not garlic salt), a pinch of parmesan cheese, and parsley until golden brown, then let cool on paper towels. They freeze well too!

Before you put the cooler away, wipe the inside down with a paper towel or rag that has been dampened with water and a few drops of vanilla extract. The alcohol in the vanilla works as a disinfectant and you cooler will smell great!
