Hold off on the sauce…………..

Wait to baste when grilling – Basting with sauce adds tremendous flavor, but barbecue sauces burn easily. Try basting in the last few minutes and once foods have been removed from the grill.

3 steps to prepare stir fry. Thank you to Jess for sharing this………..

1 – Always cook your meat first in small batches to seal it and keep it tender. Adding too much meat will reduce the temperature of the wok and make it stew, resulting in tough, flavourless meat. Don’t overcook the meat at this stage as it will continue to cook when it’s returned to the wok.

2 – Stir-fry onions first, then add hard vegetables such as carrot and broccoli. Quick-cooking vegetables, such as snow peas, leafy greens and bean sprouts, should be added towards the end of cooking. If using vegies that have a combination of both textures, such as gai laan, add the stems first and the leaves later.

3 – Add sauces and pre-cooked noodles last. They only need to be stir-fried until just heated through.

Boneless or not……………

A roast with the bone in will cook faster than a boneless roast – the bone carries the heat to the inside of the roast quicker.

Save some money…………….

Shop later in the day to take advantage of markdowns in your grocery store’s bakery and meat departments. Also make sure to keep an eye on the prices at the salad bar. If you only need a few artichoke hearts or croutons, they may be cheaper to buy there by the pound than elsewhere in the store. Save some money on that grocery bill where you can!

I’m no butcher……….

No good at butchering meat Not a problem – Many stores will butcher big cuts of meat for you for free, so ask before doing it yourself.

Shopping for meat…………

Did you know that the best time to shop for meat is in the morning? That is usually when the butcher marks down meat that is close to its sell by date. If you won’t cook it tonight, freeze it for later. Save, Save, Save!

Shop on Tuesdays……………

Try to never buy meat from the supermarket on Monday mornings. It’s likely that those packages for sale were not sold over the weekend, and most shipments of fresh meat arrive on Monday afternoon or on Tuesdays.

Use the tongs………….

Always use tongs when turning meat on the grill. When a fork pierces the meat, it releases some of the juices, making it dry out more quickly.

Using a skewer on the grill………….

When using foods with different cooking times (such as shrimp and beef), don’t combine them on the same skewer. Instead, make skewers of just shrimp or just beef, start cooking the beef first, and then combine them on a serving platter.

Preheat your grill…..

Give your grill enough time to preheat for optimum results. For a good sear, preheat your grill for at least 10-15 minutes. Keep in mind the weather can impact those times.
