Diabetic Grocery shopping……………….

Look for foods that say they’re whole grain, whole wheat, and high fiber. Truck to stick to snack items that have fewer than 8 grams of sugar per serving. You know you need to limit sugary foods when you have diabetes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t indulge your sweet tooth from time to time.

Shopping healthier………….

Next time you grocery shop, shop healthier. Choose the reduced or low-fat version of a food if possible – for example milk, cheese, yoghurt, salad dressings and gravies. Choose lean meat cuts and skinless chicken breasts. Also limit fast foods, chips, crisps, processed meats, pastries and pies, which all contain large amounts of fat. Eat Healthy and Live Healthy!

Low carb baking hint…………

Replacing granulated white sugar with honey or agave as a natural sweetener is a fantastic way to reduce the glycemic load in cakes, cookies, and other baked treats. But don’t try to replace more than a third of the regular sugar with these substitutes. Granulated sugar provides aeration in doughs and batters.

Eating healthier…………

Decrease sodium by using low sodium or unsalted ingredients. Decrease calories and carbs by using lean meat, reduced calorie and reduced fat ingredients.

Low Carb Snacks……….

Going low carb but still want snacks……Make them protein-rich. Hard-boiled eggs, slices of hard cheese, a handful of nuts. Also drink 8 to 12 eight-ounce glasses of water a day to flush toxins from your body.

Shopping healthier………..

Next visit to the Grocery Store – Choose the reduced or low-fat version of a food if possible. For example milk, cheese, yogurt, salad dressings and gravies. Also choose lean meat cuts and skinless chicken breasts. Two more healthy meat choices are Turkey or Bison meat products. Then limit fast foods, chips, crisps, processed meats, pastries and pies, which all contain large amounts of fat. You can still have delicious food while eating healthier!

Healthy Recipe SubstitutionsDiabetic living logo

Make your favorite recipes healthier with a few simple substitutions, and you’ll save on calories, carbs, fat, and sodium. We’ll show you how to enjoy classic recipes on a diabetic diet.

Use Fat-Free Plain Yogurt, Not Sour Cream

When your recipe calls for: Sour cream
Use this instead: Fat-free plain yogurt
Best for: Sauces and some baked goods

Sour cream is cream treated with lactic acid to give it the trademark tangy flavor. Yogurt has a slightly different tang, but it’s a good substitute in most savory sauces and dips. For sweet dips and sauces, you can use a flavored fat-free yogurt, such as vanilla or strawberry. Yogurt will also yield similar results when substituted for sour cream in baked goods…..

Use Crushed Cereal, Not Bread Crumbs

When your recipe calls for: Fine dry bread crumbs
Use this instead: Crushed fiber cereal
Best for: Coatings and toppings

Fine dry bread crumbs are commonly used as coatings for fried or baked fish or chicken or toppings for vegetable and starch casseroles. Substituting cereal will give you a darker, crunchier coating with fewer calories and less sodium……

Use Yogurt and Cottage Cheese, Not Sour Cream

When your recipe calls for: Sour cream
Use this instead: Equal parts low-fat yogurt and no-salt-added low-fat cottage cheese
Best for: Dips and salad dressings

Dips and salad dressings made with sour cream are smooth, creamy, and have a tangy zip, but they also can be loaded with fat, calories, and sodium. Get the same smooth tanginess by replacing sour cream with a combination of fat-free yogurt and no-salt-added reduced-fat cottage cheese……
