A homemade sloppy joe with coleslaw

A homemade sloppy joe with coleslaw

A sloppy joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun. The dish originated in the United States during the early 20th century.

Early 20th century American cookbooks offer plenty of sloppy-joe type recipes, though they go by different titles: Toasted Deviled Hamburgers, Chopped Meat Sandwiches, Hamburg a la Creole, Beef Mironton, and Minced Beef Spanish Style.

Marilyn Brown, Director of the Consumer Test Kitchen at H.K. Heinz in Pittsburgh, says their research at the Carnegie Library suggests that the sloppy joe began in a Sioux City, Iowa, cafe as a “loose meat sandwich” in 1930, the creation of a cook named Joe.

References to sloppy joes as sandwiches begin by the 1940s. One example is a 1944 Coshocton Tribune ad under the heading “Good Things to Eat” says “Sloppy Joes’ – 10c – Originated in Cuba – You’ll ask for more – The Hamburg Shop” and elsewhere on the same page, “Hap is introducing that new sandwich at The Hamburg Shop – Sloppy Joes – 10c.”

The term “sloppy Joe’s” had an earlier definition of any cheap restaurant or lunch counter serving cheap food quickly, since 1940 or a type of casual clothing.

Food companies began producing packaged sloppy joe sauce, such as Manwich, by the 1960s.

Several variations of the sloppy joe exist in North America. In Quebec, Canada, sandwiches of stewed ground beef

Ground Buffalo "Joe"

Ground Buffalo “Joe”

such as pain à la viande and pain fourré gumbo are usually served on hot dog buns. A similar sandwich, the “dynamite,” exists in the area around Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and is distinguished by the use of onions, bell peppers, and sometimes celery.

Stewed meat sandwiches are common in several other culinary traditions as well. The rou jia mo, from China’s Shaanxi Province, consists of stewed pork, beef, or lamb on a steamed bun. Keema pav of Indian cuisine uses a pav bread roll filled with keema, a minced, stewed, curried meat.

Ground turkey or textured vegetable protein may be used as a substitute for ground beef.

Today’s Menu: Chili Dogs

Cincy Chili Dogs 003

It is one freezing cold day out there, maybe 20 degrees out. I guess we ended up with about 5, maybe 5 1/2 inches of snow. It is sunny out so that’s helping to clear the streets a bit. More Winter weather on the way for tomorrow though. Warm and snug on the inside and for dinner a huge favorite of mine, Chili Dogs!

I used Oscar Mayer Extra Lean Turkey Franks, my new choice of Hot Dogs. Just boiled them for 5 minutes and they were ready. I had planned on using some of the 3 Bean Buffalo Chili but I had none in the freezer left, I’ll be making a new batch this week to cure that problem! So instead I used Hormel Turkey Chili with Beans. Emptied the can into a small sauce pan and heated it up for about 10 minutes or so. I did add a few shakes of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce to the Chili as it was heating up.

Served everything on a Healthy Life Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun. Topped the Dog with French’s Yellow Mustard, Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, and then the Chili and they were ready to go! Nothing better than a couple of Cincinnati Style Chili Dogs! For dessert later a Skinny Cow Truffle Ice Cream Bar.

Today’s Menu: Meatballs in Marinara Sauce on Bun w/ Baked Fries

Meatball Sub Fries 005
A cool but sunny and beautiful Autumn Day out again. Got the 4 wheel mobility scooter out and helped with the yard work, raking leaves. Then took it out for a spin through the neighborhood and on down to the lake area. Then some College Football for the afternoon! For dinner, Meatballs in Marinara Sauce on Bun w/ Baked Fries.

A Meatball Sandwich on a cool Autumn Day just sounded right! I used Hormel Sandwich Makers Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. I came across this at Walmart yesterday and thought I would give it a try. It comes in a plastic microwavable container. To,prepare it just puncture the plastic film and microwave for 60 seconds. Let it cool for a minute or so and it’s ready! The Meatballs were good tasting and an excellent Marinara Sauce! There’s 2 servings per package, so I have my lunch for tomorrow. I served them on a Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calorie Whole Grain Hotdog Bun. Topped it with some Sargento Reduced fat Shredded Mozzarella Cheese. I also baked some Ore Ida Simply Cracked Black Pepper and Sea Salt Country Style Fries. For dessert/snack later some slices of Cracker Barrel 2% Sharp Cheddar on Ritz Whole Grain Crackers.

Hormel Sandwich Makers Meatballs in Marinara SauceHormel Sandwich Maker Meatball
Your start to a perfect sandwich and more, like family favorite spaghetti and meatballs! Look for them in the soup and pasta aisle.
Microwave Instructions:
Puncture plastic film in several spots on top of tray or peel film back on tray about 1/4-inch. Place tray in microwave. Heat on HIGH for 60 seconds or until hot. Let tray stand for 1 minute, if desired. The tray and its contents are hot after microwaving. Carefully remove film by peeling it back around the tray. Stir, serve with your favorite bread and enjoy!

Today’s Menu: Turkey Pepperoni, Turkey Sausage, Mushrooms, Black Olive, Classic Crust Pizza
Beautiful Day out, about 70 and sunny! My parents went out to eat with friends so it was solo night for dinner and a Pizza sounded real good! I prepared a Turkey Pepperoni, Turkey Sausage, Mushrooms, Black Olive, Pizza. Oh and almost forgot I also added a small can of Anchovies!

pillsbury-classic-crust-pizza-005

I used my favorite Pizza Crust, Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust. To prepare it just preheat your oven on 400 degrees. Use a medium to large cookie sheet pan and spray it lightly with Pam. Then just open the can and spread the crust. The good thing about this is you make your crust as thin or as thick you want. Prebake it for 8 minutes and then add your toppings and put it back in the oven 8 – 10 more minutes until the crust is golden brown. Just a note; precook any of the toppings that need to be cooked, like any Sausage, before adding it as a topping.

My toppings were Hormel Turkey Pepperoni, Jennie O Lean Breakfast Sausage, Anchovies in Olive Oil,  Black Olives, Mushrooms (Sliced baby Bella), Sargento Shredded Mozzarella and Provolone Cheese, and Ragu Homestyle Pizza Sauce. As I said earlier the crust is fantastic! It bakes up to a golden brown with the outer crust nice and crunchy. I left the Pillsbury product description and web site link at the end of the post. For dessert later a Healthy Choice Chocolate Swirl Frozen Yogurt.

Today’s Menu: Chili Dogs!Chili Dogs 003

We are already getting some humid weather, not bad just enough to make it a little uncomfortable. On top of that I’m battling my Spring sinus problems. Happens every Spring and Winter like clockwork! Passes in about a week after the sinuses adjust. Because of that I really didn’t feel like putting a lot of effort into dinner so I made simple preparing a couple of Chili Dogs.

I used Ball Park White Smoked Turkey Franks that boiled. Just boiled in hot water for about 5 minutes and their done. Served them on Aunt Millie’s Light Whole Grain Buns. I topped them with Hormel Turkey With Beans. Comes in a can just heat it up in a small sauce pan and it’s ready. I also topped them with a bit of French’s Yellow Mustard and Kraft 2% Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese. For dessert later a Jello sugar Free Double Chocolate Pudding topped with Cool Whip Free Topping.

Today’s Menu: Home Made Pizza – Pillsbury Classic Pizza CrustClassic Crust Pizza 004

Heavy rain early this morning that gave way to a beautiful day today. It was in the mid 50’s and it felt good to get outside some today. For dinner tonight, Home Made Pizza – Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust.

I love using the Classic Pillsbury pizza Crust. It makes an excellent crust, browns up just right with perfect crusty edges. To prepare it just unroll it onto a cookie sheet and prebake it at 400 degrees for 8 minutes. Then take it out of the oven and add your toppings and back into the oven for 8 – 10 minutes until Cheese is melted, Crust is browned, and toppings are heated.

Speaking of the toppings I used Jennie – O Hot Lean Turkey Breakfast Sausage, Ragu Homestyle Pizza Sauce, Hormel Turkey Pepperoni, 1 small can of Sliced Black Olives, sliced Baby Bella Mushrooms, and Kraft 2% Shredded Mozzarella Cheese. Everything combined makes one delicious Pizza! For dessert/snack later a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Jolly Time Pop Corn.

Pizza tonight for dinner! Last week or so I made a Pizza using Pillsbury Artisan Pizza Crust and it turned out so delicious I had to have it again! The crust is the best home made crust I’ve ever had or made. the crust has 190 calories and 30 carbs with 16 grams of Whole Grain. Just wish those carbs were a bit lower. It bakes up perfect, golden brown.

To prepare it just preheat your oven on 400 degrees. Use a medium to large cookie sheet pan and spray it lightly with Pam. Then just open the can and spread the crust. As I said earlier the crust is fantastic! It bakes up to a golden brown with the outer crust nice and crunchy. The best homemade crust I’ve fixed. So I now have a new crust for my Pizzas! I left the Pillsbury product description and web site link at the end of the post. For dessert later a Honeybell Orange!

“Not So Sloppy” Bison Joes w/ Ore Ida Griller Potatoes

Today’s Menu: “Not so Sloppy” Bison Joes w/ Ore ida Griller Potatoes
It’s Sloppy Joe Night tonight for dinner! It’s delicious and a super easy meal to make. To make the Sloppy Joes I used a 1 lb. package of Ground Bison Sirloin, my favorite meat, 1 jar of Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Buns.Using a large skillet to brown the Bison in I seasoned it with Morton’s Salt Substitute, Ground Black Pepper, and Roasted Ground Cumin. After the Bison was browned and no longer pink I added the jar of Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce stirring and making sure the Sauce and Bison was well mixed. Simmer until it’s warm, and serve. I switched to using Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce sometime back. It’s a good thick sauce well seasoned with Spices, Onions, Green Peppers amoung other ingredients (70 calories and 15 carbs). I served them on Healthy Life Whole Grain Buns with a side of Ore Ida Steakhouse Seasoned Griller Potatoes. For dessert a Jello Sugarless Double Chocolate Pudding topped with Cool Whip free.

Hormel Not So Sloppy Joe Sauce

Richer and Thicker and Far From Ordinary

Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce is as distinctive as its name. Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce has a hint of barbecue flavor and is richer and thicker than other sloppy joe sauces.

Since its beginning in 1985, there’s been one very graphic way to show the thick and rich texture of Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce: the “drip test.” When you hold up a sloppy joe made with Not-So-Sloppy-Joe® sloppy joe sauce, there are no drips. It’s that rich and thick.

Today’s Menu: Baked Salmon w/ Grilled Asparagus, Grilled Potatoes, and Harvest Grain Bread

When I was at Meijer the other day they had some beautiful looking Salmon fillets. So this morning I went back and purchased a couple of them, one for dinner and one for the freezer. I baked this one. I seasoned it with Parsley and McCormick Grinder Sea Salt and Black Peppercorn and baked it at 400 degrees for about 12 minutes. Mmmm Salmon!

For sides I had a couple of frozen Meijer products. I had the Grilled Asparagus and Seasoned Grilled Potatoes. Both are easy to prepare. Just warm in a skillet about 5 minutes and both are done. I also had a slice of Baked Harvest Grain Bread. For a dessert/snack later slices of Cracker Barrel 2% Sharp Cheese and Hormel Turkey Pepperoni on Ritz Whole Wheat Crackers.
