Today’s Menu: Creamy Tomato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich

To start my day off I Scrambled a couple of Eggs, toasted 2 slices of Aunt Millie’s Light Whole Grain Bread, and had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Another beautiful Fall Day outside, 79 degrees and sunny! All caught up on inside cleaning so it was all outside work today, and a gorgeous day to do it! First got the leaf blower out and cleaned off the deck and driveway areas, lot of leaves already blowing around. Next took the leaf blower and cleaned the floor of the shed and got rid of a few things no longer needed. Later I got the chairs off the deck and washed them off and stored them for the year in the shed. Done for the day so I took a ride around the neighborhood and down by the lake. For Dinner tonight another one of those Comfort Foods Dinner, Creamy Tomato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

For my Soup I heated up a can of Amy’s Organic Creamy Tomato Soup. My favorite Tomato Soup by far. I’ve been using for quite some time now. So creamy with a fantastic flavor and it’s 110 calories and 19 carbs. Just empty the contents into a small sauce pan and heat on medium, stirring often, until heated. And it’s ready to go!

To make my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread. I started by buttering the outside half of a slice of bread. Layered 2 slices of the Sharp Cheddar on top. Added my top half of the sliced bread, buttering the outside of the slice. I then got out a skillet, heated it up on medium heat and lightly coated it with a 1/2 pat of Butter. When the Butter was melted I added my sandwich. Grilled it on both sides until it was golden brown and the Cheese melted. For Dessert/Snack later a bowl of Skinny Pop – Pop Corn and a Diet Peach Snapple to drink.

Today’s Menu: Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Foggy morning out there today. So for Breakfast I made a packet of Pioneer Peppered White Gravy. I also toasted a couple of slices of Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread, fried 2 Jennie – O Turkey Breakfast Sausage Links, and my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Outside it started of foggy and from there a cloudy and dreary day, a high in the 40’s with rain on and off with a little sleet. My thumb I burnt is a mess, burned it pretty good. I have to change the dressing twice a day. Hope it heals up good but I think it will be scared up. Stayed home all day and caught up on some house cleaning. Also did a load of laundry for Mom. Everything done, spent the rest of the day watching the NCAA March Madness Basketball. For Dinner tonight I’m having Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

It’s a Comfort Food Dinner tonight, Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich! I’m using one of my favorite new foods, Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix. I had a container of it in the fridge so I just reheated it on medium heat in a small sauce pan.

To prepare a package of it; In a 2 quart sauce pan bring 8 cups of water to a rolling boil. Whisk in the soup mix. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. I have several in my pantry now, trying a Minestrone Soup next.

To make my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread. I started by buttering the outside half of a slice of bread. For Breakfast this morning I toasted a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin and topped it with some Boar’s grilled-cheese-and-baked-fries-008Head Sweet Sliced Ham and a 1/2 slice of Sargento Reduced Fat Swiss Cheese, for a Breakfast Sandwich. Also had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. It’s another Spring like Winters day here, 63 degrees and partly cloudy. From what they are saying the upcoming week is going to be in the 60’s! So nice out that the flowers are already coming up around the neighborhood. After Lunch I headed over to spend some time with Dad at the rehab care center. He continues getting stronger and walking a lot better! Back home finished up some housework and took it easy the rest of the day. For Dinner tonight I prepared a Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries.

Today’s Menu: Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries

For Breakfast this morning I prepared some Buffalo Sausage, a Scrambled Egg, 2 slices of toasted Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread, and a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. While rummaging through the freezer I came across a Breakfast Scrambled Egg Buufalo Sausage 003package of Wild Idea Buffalo Ground Breakfast Sausage. Formed it into patties and fried it. I loved them, excellent seasoning! Went on-line to buy some more and they no longer make it. They have it in Buffalo Sausage Links now. Which I’ll have to try, love Wild Idea Buffalo. Outside we have another hot and humid day going on. In the 90’s and high humidity. So I spent my day inside again because of my allergies, another day of high Pollen and mold. Finished up some housework and took it easy today. For Dinner tonight I prepared a Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries.

Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries 002
It was Ham and Cheese Slider and Soup yesterday and tonight it’s more comfort food, Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries. When it’s hot and humid outside I like to eat light, nothing too heavy. To make my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread.

It’s easy to grab takeout when you’re busy, but these low-calorie recipes are just as easy and quick to prepare so you can have a healthy dinner on the table in no time!

Hot Chile Grilled Cheese
This deconstructed version of a chile relleno turned sandwich packs some heat and an ooey-gooey filling. We like the flavor of sourdough, but any kind of bread will work well. Serve with: Coleslaw and sliced pineapple…….

Shrimp Po’ Boy
This twist on the Louisiana favorite piles grilled shrimp and creamy-dressed cabbage onto a crusty bun. Bread that’s soft on the inside and crusty on the outside is perfect for a Po’ Boy sandwich. We grill both sides of a whole-wheat bun for that added crunch. You may need a few extra napkins to enjoy it, but this quick and easy sandwich is well worth it. Serve with: Sauteed corn and bell peppers……

Chicken & White Bean Salad
Zucchini and celery give this chicken-and-bean salad a nice crunch. We like serving it over a bed of slightly bitter escarole and radicchio, but any type of salad greens will work. Recipe by Nancy Baggett for EatingWell…….

Today’s Menu: Grilled Ham and Cheese w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

Grilled Ham and Cheese w Baked Crinkle Fries 013
Started my day off with a couple of Jennie- O Turkey Breakfast Sausage Links, an Egg Beater’s Egg White Scrambled Egg (topped with a sprinkle of Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese), and a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin. Also my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. A very good start to the day! We have another gloomy and rainy day out there again, in the 50’s though. Rain outside and it was clean the house today on the inside. Dusted, vacuumed, and cleaned the oven today, For dinner tonight, broke out the comfort food to drive those rainy day blues away! I prepared a Grilled Ham and Cheese w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

Grilled Ham and Cheese w Baked Crinkle Fries 001
I used Boar’s Head Maple Glazed Honey Coat Ham, Kraft Sharp Cheddar Cheese, and Aunt Millie’s Whole Grain Bread. I had purchased the Boar’s Head Maple Glazed Honey Coat Ham at Kroger, on sale the other day. I love all the Boar’s Head Meats and Cheese. Always fresh and lower in calories and sodium. To make the sandwich I buttered one side of both slices of bread with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and then on the unbuttered sides layered the Ham and then the Cheese. I then grilled the sandwich in a preheated pan that I had sprayed with Pam Cooking Spray. Grilling both sides until golden brown. I love a Grilled Cheese Sandwich, but the Ham makes it even better! A Classic Comfort Food Sandwich on rainy and dreary day.

Ore Ida Crinkle Fries4_crop

For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, served with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup. Also had a Diet Peach Snapple to drink. For dessert later a Skinny Cow Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream Bar.

Boar’s Head Maple Glazed Honey Coat Ham
A sweet treat that is nutritious and delicious. This ham has 100% pure maple syrup and golden honey baked right in, making it a great choice for sandwiches and salads alike.

One of America’s Favorites – Cheese Sandwich

September 7, 2015 at 5:28 AM | Posted in One of America's Favorites | 3 Comments

A cheese sandwich is a basic sandwich made generally with one or more varieties of cheese on any sort of bread, such as flat bread or whole wheat bread. In addition to the cheese, it may also include spreads such as butter or mayonnaise.

A grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese, served with tomato soup

A grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese, served with tomato soup

Cheese sandwiches can be uncooked, or grilled so that the bread toasts and the cheese melts (a dish referred to as a grilled cheese sandwich or simply grilled cheese). A grilled cheese is often heated by placing the buttered slices of bread, with the cheese between the slices, on a frying pan or griddle.

Another form of cooked cheese sandwich is the cheese toastie or simply toastie – a dish, particularly popular in the United Kingdom that is prepared by either baking or grilling a cheese sandwich in an oven or using a pie iron in order to toast the bread and melt the cheese. Cheddar cheese is by far the most common cheese used in this method, and butter is almost never used. It is usually served as a snack, or as a (usually a lunchtime) meal often with a side of salad.

Cheese sandwiches with added meat (such as ham, bacon, turkey and other meats) are generally referred to by more specific names. If ham is included, for example, the result is a “ham and cheese sandwich”. Grilled cheese sandwiches are often served with soup, usually tomato, in the United States, and served as a whole meal in the United States and other countries.

Cooked bread and cheese is an ancient food, according to food historians, popular across the world in many cultures; evidence indicates that in the U.S., the modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became easily available. The so-called cheese dream became popular in the United States of America during the Great Depression.

U.S. government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II. Many versions of the grilled cheese sandwich can now be found on restaurant menus across the United States and internationally.

Uncooked cheese sandwiches simply require assembly of the cheese slices on the bread, along with any additions and condiments.

A grilled cheese sandwich is assembled and then heated until the bread crisps and the cheese melts, sometimes combined with an additional ingredient such as peppers, tomatoes or onions. Several different methods of heating the sandwich are used, depending on the region and personal preference. Common methods include being cooked on a griddle, grilled, fried in a pan or made in a panini grill or sandwich toaster (this method is more common in the United Kingdom where the sandwiches are normally called “toasted sandwiches” or “toasties” and in Australia where they are called “jaffles”). A clothes iron has also been utilized to make a grilled cheese in a pinch, as in a hotel room where there are no other cooking appliances. In Benny and Joon, Johnny Depp’s character Sam makes a stack of grilled cheese sandwiches this way, though most recommend wrapping the sandwich in aluminum foil to keep the iron clean.

When making grilled cheese on an open griddle or pan, one side is cooked first, then the sandwich is flipped and cooked on the other side. The sandwich is finished when both sides are toasted and the cheese has melted. Butter, oil, or mayonnaise may first be spread on either the bread or the cooking surface in the case of butter and oil. An alternative technique is to toast or grill each half of the sandwich separately, then combine them. Another method sometimes referred as an “inside out” grilled cheese has an extra layer of cheese put on the outside of each side and cooked, causing the cheese to caramelize into a crispy outer layer.

When using butter best results are achieved at a medium heat. This prevents the milk solids in butter from burning and allows sufficient time for heat to thoroughly penetrate the sandwich and melt the cheese without burning the bread. A crispy golden-brown crust with a melted cheese center is a commonly preferred level of preparedness. Cooking times can vary depending on pan dimensions, ability to control the intensity of the heat source, bread type, cheese variety and overall thickness of pre-cooked sandwich.
