Tomato soup with basil

Tomato soup is a soup made with tomatoes as the primary ingredient. It may be served hot or cold in a bowl, and may be made in a variety of ways. It may be smooth in texture, and there are also recipes which include chunks of tomato, cream and chicken or vegetable stock. Popular toppings for tomato soup include sour cream or croutons. In the United States, the soup is frequently served with crackers, which may be crumbled onto the soup by the diner, and a grilled cheese sandwich. Tomato soup is one of the top comfort foods in Poland and the United States. It can be made fresh by blanching tomatoes, removing the skins, then blending them into a puree.

The first published tomato soup is mentioned by Eliza Leslie in 1857 in her final publication New Cookery Book. Joseph A. Campbell’s recipe for condensed tomato soup in 1897 further increased its popularity.

Commercially prepared tomato soup is available in a variety of forms, including canned, condensed and in dehydrated powder form. “Tomato” ranks among the top three flavors of soup produced by the Campbell Soup Company.

The main ingredients for tomato soup are tomato puree and wheat flour.

The cell wall structural importance for the plant’s growth and stability in the ripening process is equally as important to the quality of the tomato products it can produce. The pectin and cellulose are what determine the apparent viscosity of the tomato product. If they are broken at higher temperatures more enzymes are deactivated than if they are broken at lower temperatures.

High-fructose corn syrup is sometimes added to tomato soup to make it sweeter. HFCS is composed of both glucose and fructose in their free monosaccharide from that doesn’t crystallize readily. HFCS is also important in binding water, the monosaccharaides of fructose and glucose have the ability to bind to water in the product. The binding of water helps to reduce microbial growth by removing available water from the product it can also prevent the separation of water in products like sauces and soups.

Wheat flour is composed of six main groups, carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, lipids, minerals and vitamins. Flour is added to tomato soup to increase its viscosity. The starch in the flour acts as a gelling agent and increases the viscosity of the product. When starch granules found in the flour are heated in solution they become less ordered and begin to gel. During this process of gelatinization the crystal like structures of the starch granules disappear and the swelling starts creating a viscoelastic product.

Gazpacho is a tomato soup of Spanish origin, served cold. It originates in the region of Andalucía in southern Spain. Gazpacho is widely consumed in Spanish cuisine, as well as in neighboring

Portugal, where it is known as gaspacho. Gazpacho is mostly consumed during the summer months, due to its refreshing qualities and cold serving temperature. Many variations of gazpacho exist.

Tomato soup is often paired with a grilled cheese sandwich, toast, crumpet or English muffin.

Today’s Menu: Creamy Tomato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich

For Breakfast this morning I had a bowl of Cheerios. Had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea afterward.Outside it’s sort of windy, cloudy and a high of 44 degrees. Had another bout with Phantom Pains last night. They finally stopped around 4:00 this morning. So painful and it just drains me of any strength. So not a lot going on today. It’s a Comfort Food Sunday Dinner tonight, Creamy Tomato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Not feeling quite up to par so I wanted something light tonight so what better than Creamy Tomato Soup with a Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I heated up a can of Amy’s Organic Creamy Tomato Soup. My favorite Tomato Soup by far. I’ve been using for quite some time now. So creamy with a fantastic flavor and it’s 110 calories and 19 carbs. Just empty the contents into a small sauce pan and heat on medium, stirring often, until heated. And it’s ready to go and so good!

Then for my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread. I started by buttering the outside half of a slice of bread. Layered 2 slices of the Sharp Cheddar on top. Added my top half of the sliced bread, buttering the outside of the slice. I then got out a skillet, heated it up on medium heat and lightly coated it with a 1/2 pat of Butter. When the Butter was melted I added my sandwich. Grilled it on both sides until it was golden brown and the Cheese melted. For Dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Pudding.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

A grilled cheese sandwich is a sandwich generally made with one or more varieties of cheese (a cheese sandwich) on any sort of grilled or toasted bread, such as flat bread or wheat bread, that may include spreads such as butter or mayonnaise. Additional ingredients such as pepperoni and ham are also common.

Cheese sandwiches commonly referred to as a grilled cheese sandwich or a cheese toastie, are sandwiches that can be grilled so that the bread toasts and the cheese melts. A grilled cheese is often heated by placing the buttered slices of bread, with the cheese between the slices, on a frying pan or griddle. Grilled cheese is not typically made on a grill.

Another form of cooked cheese sandwich is the cheese toastie or toastie, a dish particularly popular in the United Kingdom that is prepared by either baking or grilling a cheese sandwich in an oven, or toasting bag in an electric toaster, or using a pie iron in order to toast the bread and melt the cheese. Cheddar is the most common cheese used in a toastie. It is usually served as a snack, or as a (usually lunchtime) meal, in most cases with a side of salad.

Cooked bread and cheese is an ancient food according to food historians, popular across the world in many cultures. Evidence indicates that, in the U.S., the modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became readily available. The cheese dream, an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich, became popular in the U.S. during the Great Depression.

U.S. government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II. Many versions of the grilled cheese sandwich can now be found on restaurant menus across the U.S. and internationally.

In the United States, grilled cheese sandwiches are often served with soup (usually tomato soup), and may be served as a whole meal.

A grilled cheese sandwich with American cheese served with tomato soup

A grilled cheese sandwich is assembled by creating a cheese filling between two slices of bread, which is then heated until the bread crisps and the cheese melts. It is sometimes combined with an additional ingredient such as peppers, tomatoes, or onions, though many other ingredients may be used. Several different methods of heating the sandwich are used, depending on the region and personal preference. Common methods include being cooked on a griddle, grilled, fried in a pan or made in a panini grill or sandwich toaster. This last method is more common in the United Kingdom, where the sandwiches are normally called “toasted sandwiches” or “toasties”, and in Australia, where they are called “jaffles”.

Some restaurants, food carts and food trucks in the United States specialize in the grilled cheese sandwich. The Grilled Cheese Grill restaurants are a combination of reclaimed vehicle and food cart restaurants that focus on gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches in Portland, Oregon. The Grilled Cheese Truck is an American food truck company serving gourmet “chef driven” grilled cheese sandwiches. The company started in Los Angeles, California in 2009, and has since expanded throughout Southern California, Phoenix, San Antonio and Austin. The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen is a restaurant in San Francisco, California that specializes in the sandwich.

Today’s Menu: Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries

I just had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea for Breakfast this morning. I had to have Mom at the Eye Doctor at 9:00. They had to check Mom’s right eye that had the cataract removed, everything looked great! She has the left one done next week. 82 degrees, humid, and thunderstorms outside today. Cleaned the house today, ran the vacuum and dusted. I bought a couple of Sweet Pepper plants and both are loaded with small Peppers coming in. Also have Sweet Basil, Chives, and Rosemary growing. For Dinner Tonight I’m having a Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries.

Not feeling real good this afternoon. I had a Dinner in mind but I’m keeping it simple tonight, I prepared a Grilled Cheese and Baked Fries. To make my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Aunt Millie’s Light Whole Grain Bread. Oh, nothing like a good and toasty Grilled Cheese sometimes!

To go with the Grilled Cheese I baked up some Alexia Organic Yukon Select Fries. Seasoned them with Morton’s Lite salt and Ground Black Pepper. Baked them at 425 degrees for 16 minutes. They bake up beautifully and seasoned just right.! Plus they are only 120 calories and 15 net carbs. Served with a side of my favorite Ketchup, Hunt’s Ketchup. For Dessert/Snack later a bowl of Skinny Pop – Pop Corn with a Coke Zero to drink.

Today’s Menu: Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich

For Breakfast on this cold Sunday Morning I had a toasted Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin. I then got out the Egg Beater’s Egg Whites and Scrambled a 1/2 cup of it, 1/2 equals 2 Eggs. Next I fried some al fresco Uncured Chicken Bacon and I also used a slice of Sargento Ultra Thin Swiss Cheese. Put it all together and I had one delicious Breakfast Sandwich! Also had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. The al fresco Uncured Chicken Bacon I used is some of the best Bacon I’ve come across in a while. It fries up so crisp and has an excellent taste! As I said its cold, 15 degrees and a wind chill of 10 degrees. It was mostly sunny but only got up to 25 degrees. Did a load of laundry after Breakfast. Then after Lunch I cleaned the house, vacuum and dusted. Not much else going on so I kicked back and watched some College Basketball. So for Dinner tonight I’m having Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

Nothing like a easily made Comfort Food Dinner! Creamy Potato Soup w/ Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I’m using one of my favorite Soups, Bear Creek Creamy Potato Soup Mix. I really love using all the Bear Creek Products! So delicious and easy to prepare.

To prepare a package of it; In a 2 quart sauce pan bring 8 cups of water to a rolling boil. Whisk in the soup mix. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. The package makes 8 cups and very easy to prepare and makes one delicious Potato Soup.

To make my Grilled Cheese I’ll be using; Kraft Sliced Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Blue Bonnet Light Butter, and Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread. For Dessert a Jello Sugarfree Dark Chocolate Pudding topped with Cool Whip Free.
