Keeping peaches fresh………

Once ripe, the ideal way to keep peaches fresh is in a bag with large holes or, if they aren’t being kept in the refrigerator, in an open bag away from other fruits. After you cut up your peaches, wrapping them tightly and placing in the fridge is your best choice.

Freezing Apples………

Here’s a few Hints if you are planning to freeze Apples – You don’t have to peel apples before freezing them, but you can if you want to. … Note: For a dessert, like baked apples, I recommend slicing the apples into thin, 1/8-inch slices, so they can be used directly from the freezer. No need to thaw the apples before using them!

The apple varieties that stand up best to freezing are Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Cortland and Empire. You’ll want hardy apples with a strong, snappy texture. Here are two methods to freeze apples: First, wash, peel, and core each apple (use sweet apple varieties for best results). Put your fall apples to good use and freeze pie filling, whole pies, applesauce, sliced apples, even whole apples for later. … Sweeter apples such as Fujis or Galas are more likely to hold their flavor than tart varieties, but any apple will do fine in the freezer for six to nine months.

Breathe easy……………..

Wrap all produce loosely; air circulation around fruits and vegetables reduces spoilage. A sealed perforated plastic bag is ideal. You can make your own by simply poking several holes in an ordinary sandwich or freezer bag.

Peeling Fruit………….

Any fruit that has a tight thin skin over a juicy interior, such as peaches, pears, apricots or tomatoes, can be easily peeled if they are blanched in boiling water for about 30 seconds.

Vegetarian……………………….

Don’t load up on junk food! Just because potato chips are vegetarian doesn’t mean they should be a staple of your new diet. Work and try new fruits and veggies into your diet. Don’t overlook certain produce because you’ve never had it before. Eat Healthy!

For healthier cooking……………………………….

Incorporate more fruits and vegetables for healthy cooking. Most people do not consume enough fruit and vegetables. Try to incorporate 5 to 13 servings of fruit per day to your cooking. Choose fruits and vegetables from different varieties to meet your needs.

Don’t bother peeling all produce……………………….

Eat the skin! All fruits and vegetables have nutrient and fiber dense skin, so if you have tender product don’t bother peeling. Just make sure it is washed well. Carrots, sweet potatoes and beets all roast up great skin on. Cook on!

When canning leave the peel on………………

Canning tomatoes, pears, and plums without peeling them preserves the nutrients, prevents waste, and saves time. If you don’t prefer the texture of the peel, then by all means, remove it. But if you don’t mind it, there’s no reason not to keep it on. That being said, some fruits and vegetables should definitely be peeled:

* Peaches – canning peaches with a fuzzy peel is generally not as appetizing

* Citrus fruits – the peel on oranges, limes, lemons, and so on is bitter

* Beets – the peel is just too tough
