A Food Storage Hint, did you know…..

 
The butter compartment in the door is not the best for butter, an egg keeper in the door not the best for eggs. Keepthem inside the fridge, with butter well wrapped and the eggs covered.

Organize your freezer……

 
* Organize your freezer space into food groups: meat, fish, leftovers fruit, and vegetables. Makes for a quick find of what you are looking for instead of a search party.
* Put older packages at the front of the freezer so you can use them first.
* Make sure you label all bags and containers; contents and date frozen.

Fresher fruits and vegetables…….

 
Line the bottom of the vegetable compartment with paper toweling. This absorbs the excess moisture and keeps all vegetables and fruits fresher for a longer period of time.

Food Storage……..

 
Stop storing leftovers in covered serving bowls or pots in the fridge. These leftovers hog space., dry out, spill, and absorb odors or cause them. Transfer food to plastic tubs with airtight lids.

Here’s one my Mom has always done…..

 
If you’re only using half of a bell pepper for a recipe, make the other half last longer with a simple trick. When you’re slicing the pepper, make sure to leave the seeds and membrane intact on one side. Then store this side in a sealed plastic bag or container in the fridge. Leaving the seeds intact will make the pepper last longer.

Here’s one I did not know…..

 
Freezing tends to intensify the flavors of certain foods, such as garlic,peppers, and cloves. Use less in a dish that you will freeze, and when reheating, taste and add more as needed.

If your greens seem sandy or dirty rinse and dry them well, then wrap them in a paper towel before placing in a plastic bag. Fruits and vegetables stored at room temperature should be removed from any packaging and left loose.

Freezer hint…..

 
You can freeze any food except canned or preserved food and whole eggs. Some foods, however, do not freeze well. High – fat products like cream and mayonnaise tend to separate when defrosted, and high water content vegetables such as lettuce and cucumbers will go soggy. Freezer temperature is critical for maintaining the quality of foods. Keep it set at 0 degrees.

Store fruits and vegetables in separate drawers in your fridge. Even when chilled, fruits give off ethylene gas that shortens the shelf life of other fruit and vegetables by causing them to ripen more quickly.
