Sometimes you can’t beat the convenience and price of a drive-through meal. Here are some fast-food options that won’t derail your goals.

Best Bites at Burger Joints

At burger joints, the calories, fat, and sodium add up quickly. Search nutrition information online to find options with fewer than 400 calories, 20 grams of fat, and 800 milligrams of sodium per serving…….

Wendy’s

Go for a healthful yet filling salad. This half-size order of Apple Pecan Chicken Salad at Wendy’s is served with pomegranate dressing and pecans. To drink, choose unsweetened iced tea.

McDonald’s

For 15 grams of fast protein, choose the Filet-O-Fish sandwich at McDonald’s. Apple slices and unsweetened iced tea are refreshing and healthful side and drink choices.

The Best & Worst Fast-Food Breakfast Sandwiches

Find out how to make the healthiest choice on your next fast-food breakfast sandwich.
Breakfast is important—it fuels your morning and may help keep your hunger in check so you don’t overdo it at lunch. Although making breakfast at home is ideal—you have more control over the ingredients and can make sure you have a healthy, balanced meal—there are times when you need or want to pick up breakfast on the go. Many popular fast-food restaurants now offer breakfast sandwiches, which spurred me to look into the healthiest (and least healthy) options.

Starbucks
The Best: The Starbucks Spinach & Feta Breakfast Wrap has 290 calories, 3.5 grams of saturated fat, 6 grams of fiber, 19 grams of protein and 830 mg of sodium. It’s Starbucks’s lowest-calorie option, plus the 6 grams of fiber will help you feel full longer. If you want a more classic breakfast sandwich, try the Starbucks Turkey Bacon & White Cheddar Classic Breakfast Sandwich. It has 320 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams of fiber, 18 grams of protein and 700 mg of sodium.

The Worst: The Starbucks Sausage & Cheddar Classic Breakfast Sandwich has 500 calories, 9 grams of saturated fat, less than a gram of fiber, 19 grams of protein and 920 mg of sodium. Choosing sausage over the turkey bacon in the healthier sandwich makes a big impact on calories and saturated fat……

McDonald’s
The Best: The McDonald’s Egg McMuffin® has 300 calories, 5 grams of saturated fat, 2 grams of fiber, 18 grams of protein and 820 mg sodium. This basic breakfast sandwich has fewer calories and less saturated fat than any of the McDonald’s options with sausage, bacon or served on biscuits or McGriddles®.

The Worst: The McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddle® has 560 calories, 12 grams of saturated fat, 2 grams of fiber, 20 grams of protein and 1,360 mg of sodium. By choosing a breakfast sandwich that has sausage and is served on a pancake-type bun, called a McGriddle®, you add extra calories, saturated fat and sodium…..

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Another Dining out tip, this one from Diane. Thank you Di for passing this one along!

Fried and breaded foods, such as crispy chicken sandwiches and breaded fish fillets, are high in fat and calories. Select grilled or roasted lean meats — such as turkey or chicken breast, lean ham, or lean roast beef.

If your going out to eat any meal you can still eat healthy! Take advantage of the healthy side dishes offered at many fast-food restaurants. For example, instead of french fries choose a side salad with low-fat dressing or a baked potato. Or add a fruit bowl or a fruit and yogurt option to your meal. Other healthy choices include apple or orange slices, corn on the cob, steamed rice, or baked potato chips.

Today’s Menu: Izzy’s Lean Corned Beef Sandwich w/ Pringle Fat-Free Chips

izzys-lean-003 (1)
I’d like to start by wishing my Mom and Dad a Happy 66th Wedding Anniversary! Wow, 66 years! It’s been another one of those humid and muggy days out again, with rain on and off. Puttered around the house doing some odd and end jobs and that’s about it for today. I wanted something light for Dinner tonight so The Kitchen is Closed! – and It’s Izzy’s Tonight!

Had the best Corned Beef Sandwich that I know of, the Izzy’s Lean Corned Beef Sandwich. Plus with their “Lean” version of the Corned Beef it makes it healthier than most also. The sandwich contains 170 calories and 16 carbs per serving (1/2 Sandwich) and 340 calories and 32 carbs for a Full Sandwich. I had the Full Sandwich along with a serving of Pringle Fat-Free Chips and they’re 70 calories and 14 net carbs per serving. Then to go along with it all I had an Ice-Cold Diet Dr. Pepper, 0 calories and 0 carbs. Love sticking a small bottle of Dr. Pepper in the freezer for a bit, just enough to get a layer of ice forming on it! For dessert/snack later a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Jolly Time Pop Corn.

Wild Idea Buffalo – Slow Food Nation

No Wild Idea Recipe this week but a very good article from the wildideaoffice.

Slow Food NationWild Idea Buffalo
By: wildideaoffice

It is no secret that America has been labeled as the “Fast Food Nation”. Countless amounts of literature and film materials have been published to draw attention to the faults in the average American diet, which has been linked to, and resulted from our nation’s problematic agricultural system and most importantly, factory farming. Oh yes, most of us know about factory farming and probably associate it with the gruesome videos that animal rights activists have been sharing with us- even before these issues became en-vogue.

The truth is, factory farming is a real issue. Luckily, there are a couple of ways we can make a difference, and they do not necessarily involve becoming a vegetarian, let alone a vegan. Although both of those are viable options. We would be crazy if we told you to cut out meat completely, rather we suggest slowing down for the sake of sustainability. We do believe in meat. High-quality meat, and this is where Wild Idea Buffalo comes in – here is how:

The more variety you add to the types of meat you consume in your diet, the less farmers will depend on factory farming. If you appreciate a good steak, or a well prepared chicken breast, you’ll love Buffalo meat.
Our Buffalo are 100% grass fed and freely roam in their natural environment on the Great Plains of South Dakota. Our Buffalo are humanely Field Harvested on the prairie in a stress free environment for the animals.
Every aspect, from the farming process, to preparing and eating Wild Idea Buffalo meat represents our idea of slow food. The only aspect of fast food we will show you, is our selection of pre-marinated, heat & eat products made with all organic ingredients.
Wild Idea strives to respect and use every part of our Buffalo during processing and never waste what can be used. The bones, for example, can be used for excellent broths and the bone marrow makes for exquisite dishes, which are frequently prepared in major culinary hotspots.
So, Slow-Down and choose foods that have been given the time and space to grow naturally. We believe you’ll appreciate going slowly for a change.

WENDY’S NEW PRETZEL BACON CHEESEBURGER COMES OUT TODAY

A new burger’s coming to town with buns blazing.Wendys

In a twist of events, fast-food chain Wendy’s launched their long-rumored Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger, a premium burger served on a toasted pretzel bun, today. The $4.69 burger includes cheddar cheese, thick-sliced bacon and smoky honey mustard sauce and is sandwiched between a pretzel bun.

Hailed as “the ultimate mash-up of three American loves: pretzel, bacon and cheeseburger” by Craig Bahner, Wendy’s chief marketing officer, the burger performed very well in recent market tests. The burger should be at all locations within a few weeks, and if successful may become a permanent addition to the menu.
