Excellent article on my favorite health drink, Green Tea. I left the link to the article at the bottom of the page. Check the site out while there, seems to have a lot of good info!

5 reasons to start drinking green tea today

Kriti Saraswat November 6,

Fit celebrities and nutritionists alike will tell you that green tea is a vital part of a healthy diet. Ever wondered what makes this beverage such a big hit? For starters, a cup of green tea contains as little as 2 calories which makes it ideal for weight-watchers. Here are other reasons to start with your green cuppa today.

Fights cancer:
Green tea is full of antioxidants which help in preventing various kinds of cancers. Antioxidants avert the damage caused by free radicals (molecules produced when the body breaks down food or due to smoking, drinking, etc) by attacking them before they can damage healthy cells. This in turn protects the body from various ailments. (Read: Drink green tea for weight loss and to keep heart disease at bay!)

Keeps heart healthy:
Drinking green tea regularly can help you keep heart ailments like stroke at bay. This is because it lowers the bad cholesterol in your body and prevents blockage around the arteries.

Aids in weight loss:
It is a low-calorie drink no doubt. But it is also good for your metabolism as it increases it which means you burn more calories faster. It also stimulates the nervous system which enhances the fat-burning process. Team it with 30 minutes of daily exercise and right diet and you are sure to get a toned body.

Slows skin ageing:
Since green tea has antioxidants, it slows down the ageing process and makes your skin look youthful. The skin shows signs of ageing like fine lines, wrinkles, etc when it is not well-hydrated and as one nears menopause. In order to combat this, drink green tea daily which will reduce the appearance of lines by boosting collagen production. (Read: 3 secret anti-ageing potions revealed)

Regulates blood sugar levels:
Diabetics often have to worry about the spike in their blood sugar levels after a meal. Drinking green tea will regulate as it has polyphenols and polysaccharides which are effective in lowering these levels. According to researchers, a polyphenol called epigallocatechin gallete (EGCG) inhibits the production of glucose in the liver in turn lowering the blood sugar levels.

How to make green tea

Switch to green tea for your health’s sake. A cup in the morning or before bed is ideally recommended but you can have it any time according to your preference. Here’s how you can make a perfect cup of green tea:

Boil water in a vessel. Now add one teaspoon of green tea leaves in it. (If you are making more than one cup, add one tsp for every cup). Let the leaves boil for 2-3 minutes at least and then turn off the gas.

Place a sieve over the cup and strain the water in it. Now add a spoon of honey in it. You can also add a dash of lemon for that extra zing. Mix well and enjoy.

These days, there are green teabags available in the market in various flavours including mint, lemon, etc. You can use these too. Just place the teabag in the cup and add hot water. Let it settle for 2-3 minutes and then add honey and enjoy your tea.

Here’s a neat trick to save that last bit of wine at the end of the bottle. Freeze it in ice-cube trays, then store the cubes in a freezer bag. Use them in wine coolers and any dish that calls for wine.

If you want to keep your wine(or other beverages) cool on a hot summer days, use frozen grapes instead of ice cubes. They’ll keep the White Grapesdrink cold and they won’t dilute it or change the taste as they thaw. Just make sure you wash them before freezing!

Bockfest 2012 – Celebrating 20 years!

March 2-4, 2012

Bockfest is a celebration of historic Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati‘s brewing heritage and the coming of spring. There are several bock beer festivals that take place around the world, but Cincinnati‘s Bockfest is the oldest and largest in the United States. Bockfest occurs during the first weekend of March. It begins with a parade on Friday evening that starts at Arnold’s Bar & Grill, Cincinnati’s oldest saloon. The parade is lead by a goat pulling a keg of bock beer and the reigning Sausage Queen. It ends at Bockfest Hall where the ceremonial first keg is blessed, the best Parade entries are honored, and Bockfest officially begins. The Hall is open throughout the weekend and features live entertainment, great food, historic walking tours, authors and breweriana, a homebrew competition, Continental Sunday celebrations and lots of delicious bock beer. Bockfest is not just limited to the Hall. It occurs in a number of participating venues in Over-the-Rhine and the central business district. There is no admission fee for the hall and typically no admission fee for the participating venues. (If a venue charges a fee, it will be indicated on the event schedule.) A free shuttle bus runs a continuous loop around location, including Garfield Suites which is offering a special Bockfest Rate for festival goers.

Green tea business grows in India amid health awareness

Article on the health benifits of one of my favorite drinks, Green Tea. Click on the link at the bottom of the post to read the entire article.

Mithun Dasgupta | 27 Feb, 2012
More and more tea makers are adding green tea in their portfolio as consumers in India are developing a taste for the beverage for its many health-promoting effects.

Green tea consumption in India is rising at a rate of more than 10 percent annually. According to J Thomas & Company, the world’s largest tea auctioneer, consumption of green tea, considered very urbane and sophisticated, is rising from a very tiny base.

“From a small consumption base, demand for green tea is increasing. There will be growth in consumption. Traditionally, people here drink black tea with sugar and milk. But green tea consumption will grow in the future because of its health benefits and awareness,” said Krishan Katyal, J Thomas & Co director.

Katyal said India, the world’s second biggest producer of tea, on an average produces 9-11 million kg of green tea annually and half of that was currently being consumed domestically.

“It (consumption) will grow. I, however, do not think that it will grow by leaps and bounds,” he observed…..

The Saboscrivner

The Saboscrivner is a librarian who writes about food in Orlando, Florida, and beyond. I was inspired by Chew, a brilliant, bizarre, food-obsessed comic book series about characters with food-related super powers. Creators John Layman and Rob Guillory introduced their saboscrivner in Chew #3 with a description: "[A saboscrivner] can write about food so accurately, so vividly and with such precision – people get the actual sensation of taste when reading about the meals [he] writes about."
