Rantings of an Amateur Chef

Where are you going to get a better breakfast, the local hole-in-the-wall diner, or the elegant dining room of a five-star hotel?

While I’m a sucker for the diner, many will experience a better meal at the hotel. It could be the food is better. It could be the environment is better. But it could be that you paid more at the hotel so you perceive the food there as a higher quality.

There have been a number of studies on this phenomenon. In a recent article in The Atlantic, it highlights how an Italian restaurant in New York City served a bunch of individuals a buffet with one half paying $4 for the buffet and the other half paying $8. They then surveyed the group and tracked their satisfaction ratings with the food.
